CONESTOGA

Conestoga is defined in the dictionary as – A large wagon with broad wheels and an arched canvas top; used by the United States pioneers to cross the prairies in the 19th century.

In the modern day we still have covered wagons that cross the prairies as well as the rest of the continent. These trailers can haul just about anything under dimensional. Some folks call these curtain vans. They do come in flat bed, or step deck configurations. These are great for general freight that needs to be loaded from the side of the truck. When a step deck is equipped with ramps they can haul anything wheeled or tracked small enough to fit. Some of these trailers come with doors on the back so it can still be loaded like a regular van. The special part is the whole curtain folds up to the front of the truck so it can be easily loaded and then easily closed. There are several manufacturers making these trailers and I am sure there are different variations not mentioned here

Why operators fancy this? If you ever had to climb on top of a truck and wrestle a tarp in the weather one time that would be enough for some to not want to do that again. I have heard stories from many operators over the years. To put tarping a truck into perspective they weigh more than 100lbs rolled up and are cumbersome to maneuver around, add wind into the mix and its trouble. Lots of operators ask for more money to tarp on average its about $100.
